One more Rush double-standard: TMQ vs. ESPN

I love Tuesday Morning Quarterback. Gregg Easterbrook combines an inner geek with a love of football, and adds a splash of haiku.

In 2003, TMQ was a regular feature on Page 2 of

Then, this column in The New Republic caused a bit of a blog-storm because of some comments it included about Jewish film producers.

Roger L. Simon was not amused: Racist Garbage in the New Republic. Mr. Easterbrook, showing class, addressed his critics directly and tried to make amends. But, was fired from his ESPN gig.

Shortly thereafter, TMQ was picked up by The archive is here.

This e-mail appeared in my in-box on 24 April:

Subject: TMQ returns to ESPN
Dear Friends of TMQ,

Ye gods! The NFL was fun, but Tuesday Morning Quarterback is returning to ESPN.

The column re-starts on tomorrow, Tuesday the 25th, with my annual mocking of the mock drafts. The Houston Texans use the first overall pick to select Dick Cheney -- and switch to the shotgun formation.

Thanks for your support of Tuesday Morning Quarterback. Watch, and maybe ESPN TV, for more.

The New Republic article was published 2 weeks after Rush Limbaugh resigned from NFL Sunday Countdown for his comments on Donovan McNabb.

TMQ is now back on ESPN where it belongs. Rush is still on the radio where he belongs.

Will Rush be re-hired by ESPN? Holding breath...Face blue...Passing out...

The Definition of Atrocity: Part I - the Beheading of Atwar Bahjat

UPDATE: Although it may not have been Atwar Bahjat, I think the definition still applies.

atro cious adj [L atroc-, atrox gloomy, atrocious, fr. atrater black + -oc-, -ox (akin to Gk ops eye) - more at EYE] 1: extremely wicked, brutal or cruel: BARBARIC 2: APPALLING, HORRIFYING 3 a: utterly revolting: ABOMINABLE <~ working conditions> b: of very poor quality <~ handwriting> [MW Collegiate - 10th ed.]

I believe this fits. Could it be that one man's atroctiy is another man's salvation? I'm waiting for worldwide protests on this one (but I'm not holding my breath).

I agree with Ms. Malkin and Mr. Spencer that blindly accepting immigrants who may believe this type of behavior is acceptable, is insane.

However, you can take comfort that this type of slaughter is humane, according to Islam Online:

The cut should involve the windpipe (trachea), gullet (esophagus), and the two jugular veins without cutting the spinal cord. This method results in the rapid gush of blood draining most of it from the animal’s body. If the spinal cord is cut, the nerve fibers to the heart might be damaged leading to cardiac arrest thus resulting in stagnation of blood in the blood vessels. The blood must be drained completely before the head is removed. This purifies the meat by removing most of the blood that acts as a medium for microorganisms; meat also remains fresh longer as compared to other methods of slaughtering.

Oh, I'm sorry...those are the instructions for humanely slaughtering animals.

The object used to slaughter the animal should be sharp and used swiftly. The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerves in the brain responsible for pain. Thus the animal does not feel pain. The movements and withering that happen to the animal after the cut is made are not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles deficient in blood. The prophet (peace be upon him) also taught Muslims neither to sharpen the blade of the knife in front of the animal nor to slaughter an animal in front of others of its own kind [what about taking pictures of it on a cell phone? -SMP]
